The Society of Sculptors was established in 1935 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and presented it first exhibitions in that year. The Society was one of the founding organizations in the formation of the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, formerly the Arts and Crafts Center. “SOS”, as it is commonly referred to, is one of the oldest groups promoting sculpture, locally, regionally and nationally. From its inception it has had as a goal the encouragement and nurturing of new talent in the field of sculpture.
The Society of Sculptors is a member organization. It is organized as a members’ guild associated with and located at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. The Pittsburgh Center for the Arts is located at 6300 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15232.
The objectives of SOS are to:
bring together sculptors and individuals who appreciate sculpture
promote a broad range of sculpture by fostering an appreciation of sculpture in all its forms
provide a forum for the exchange of ideas on sculpture through educational programs and workshops
support creative development and education of its members and the community
promote civic and community appreciation of sculpture and advocate for sculpture in public places
promote the work of members and provide opportunities for members to exhibit and sell their works
A general membership meeting of SOS is held annually in January. At that meeting, officers are elected for the year and announcements are made as to coming events for the year. During the year, other membership meetings may be held to cover issues concerning the organization. Social and educational programs are also held.
