Ron Nigro
You clearly are drawn to sculpture, why not painting or drawing?
Sculpture has always attracted my greatest interest, as a young child I loved to make art. Usually I would draw however making things, actually making something real was thrilling. Once I was scolded for using my father’s nails on my scrap wood ship.
Material plays an important role in sculpture. Do you have a favorite?
My work is primarily assembled using wood and metal as the armature. I have used a very wide variety of items especially Technology salvaged materials. Techniques include etched panels in dry point and acid etched, copper enameling, metal work, and wood working. The additions of found objects is an interesting contrast and often spans time imagery.
That first notable art experience, is this something you remember?
I can not remember a time when my interest in art was not present. In primary school it started to show, being noticed for something I mean. This continued through secondary school sometimes for not the best of reasons. College and what to do, Art teacher of course. After half of my education career went by I decide to also be an Artist also.
Your personal energy – if not focused on art making, what would you be doing?
The mechanical aspect of my art comes from my interest in mechanical things. Cars attracted my interest as a young man and I spent some time there, I did learn a lot that I have used in my art. The idea of using the salvaged tech scrap was an item of convenience. At the time easily available and very unique in the design character of the items used.
