FireTree Sculpture Festival - 2019
What was the first thing you ever built?
How did you put it together? The Society of Sculptors, better known as S.O.S, wants to answer your questions about how artists make things. The 3rd annual FireTree Sculpture Festival will introduce you to sculptors as they demonstrate and encourage visitors to interact with materials and techniques. Some of the action areas you’ll find at this free family friendly event are welding, stone carving, hot metal pour, mold making, clay modeling, precious metal clay, stone carving, glass, and blacksmithing. Throughout the day, the music of local musicians will fill Millvale’s Riverfront Park along Pittsburgh’s North Shore Trail at the 40th Street Bridge. At the center of the festival stands the FireTree. This 22 foot tall metal tree stands as a symbol of positive community engagement… and lights up with fire at nightfall following a performance by Grand Prismatic at 8:00pm. |
Festival History
In mid-winter of 2017 a small group of artists from the Society of Sculptors (S.O.S) looked upon a frozen Allegheny River from a hilltop near the 40th Street Bridge. On that day a demonstration, community focused summer sculpture festival was born. With support from Millvale Borough and hours of volunteer organizing the first event was held on July 22, 2017. SculptureFest, as it was called at the time, was presented in and around the pavilion at Riverfront Park in Millvale. Hot, wet weather did not deter an enthusiastic crowd. As the day came to a close, it appeared that something more was needed – a climax event to highlight the energy of the day. That fall, the FireTree concept was born. 2018 saw the growth of the festival to include ten demonstration tents, expanded live music performances, and the culminating Community Fire Celebration with the FireTree presented with the support of the Millvale Volunteer Fire Department. In 2019, the energized artists of S.O.S are again staging this innovative festival as just onemore example of the smart, creative, resourceful, and joyful spirit of the Pittsburgh region. |
